In developing countries, the prevalence of postpartum depression has almost doubled than that of the developed world. The effect of postpartum depression on the mother, her marital relationship, and her children makes it an important condition to diagnose, treat and prevent. Untreated postpartum depression can have a prolonged adverse effect on the mother and her children. The incidence of postpartum depression was 12% [95% CI] while the overall prevalence of depression was 17% [95% CI] among healthy mothers without a prior history of depression. Prevalence was similar regardless of the type of diagnostic tool used; however, there were statistical differences in the prevalence between different geographical regions, with the Middle East having the highest prevalence (26%, 95% CI) and Europe has the lowest (8%, 95% CI).&nbsp;

2. The Touch: Touch is an essential part of your child's development and aids in bonding. Baby massage has been shown to reduce the severity of symptoms in postpartum depressed mothers.

3. Sing to your little one: Singing to your baby has numerous advantages whether you are the best or worst singer in the world. Trying to sing to your baby not only provides them with the sensory stimulation they require to focus their attention, but it also serves as a distraction from the negative thoughts associated with depression, while also empowering you as a parent.

4.&nbsp; Look after yourself as well: Taking care of yourself is one of the best ways to prevent postpartum depression. Women suffering from postpartum depression frequently take longer to fall asleep and sleep for less time. If you have family or friends who can watch your baby while you nap, get their help. Go outside and enjoy the sunshine. Exposure to sunlight and fresh air will improve your mood significantly. And take care of yourself as much as possible.

Postpartum depression is a non-psychotic depressive disorder that affects 13 to 19% of postpartum women. This condition begins in the postpartum period and persists up to a one-year duration after delivery.
